Meet Coach Crabb, Riverlea’s Community Basketball Champion

We are excited to introduce you to Coach Andrew Crabb, Riverlea's own basketball champion, who’s making a real difference in the community. At just 22, Andrew has already built an impressive career as both a player and a coach, with over 11 years on the court and three years of coaching. His mission is to help young players develop skills, build confidence, and feel supported—something he wishes he had when he first started.

Andrew’s journey into coaching comes from his own experiences as a player. “I wasn’t very good at first and lacked confidence,” he recalls. “I was self-taught until a coach believed in me, and that changed everything. Now, I want to offer that same support to others.” After playing for the Central District Lions, Andrew began coaching at schools and recently started his own business, driven by his desire to mentor young athletes.

The most rewarding part of coaching for Andrew is watching his players grow. “Seeing kids gain confidence and apply new skills during a game is incredible,” he says. To keep training fun, he uses mini games to reinforce techniques, keeping players motivated and engaged.

One of his most memorable coaching experiences was working with students who struggled with behaviour. “Basketball became an incentive—if they showed up and behaved, they got to play. I wasn’t just a coach; I was also a mentor, connecting with them in ways their teachers couldn’t.” This experience deepened his commitment to supporting kids both on and off the court.
